The Kokosing Gap Trail is more than a pathway through nature, it is a story of community, dedication, and the transformation of local history into a resource that connects people, towns, and generations.
Once a highly traveled railroad corridor, the land that is now the Kokosing Gap Trail began as part of the Pennsylvania Railroad line. For decades, trains rolled through the scenic hills of Knox County, carrying passengers, goods, and industry between Mount Vernon, Gambier, Howard, and Danville. When rail traffic eventually declined and the tracks fell silent, the corridor sat unused, but the communities along its route saw possibility where others saw abandonment.
In the early 1990s, a passionate community group came together with a shared vision: convert the former rail corridor into a beautiful, multi-use recreational trail that residents and visitors could enjoy for generations to come. Through thousands of volunteer hours, fundraising efforts, and unwavering persistence, the Kokosing Gap Trail was officially developed and opened to the public.
What makes the Kokosing Gap Trail truly special is that it was built by volunteers from the ground up. From clearing the original rail bed to installing the bridge decks and signage, much of the work was done by local individuals who believed that the trail would enrich the area socially, economically, and environmentally. Their dedication made the Kokosing Gap Trail the first paved rail-trail in Ohio built entirely by community volunteers.
Today, the trail stretches 14 miles through some of the most scenic landscapes in central Ohio, along the winding Kokosing River, past dense woodlands, open farmland, and through the historic heart of local towns. Visitors can explore highlights such as the restored locomotive and caboose in Gambier, the beautiful Brown Family Environmental Center, wildlife viewing areas, bridges, and playgrounds, all while enjoying a peaceful, accessible outdoor experience.
What started as an abandoned rail line has become one of Ohio’s most beloved recreational destinations, a place for running, biking, walking, nature watching, and connecting with the great outdoors. The trail continues to be maintained by the Kokosing Gap Trail volunteers, keeping the spirit of community alive with every mile.
The Kokosing Gap Trail stands as a testament to what a community can accomplish when it comes together with imagination, determination, and a love for preserving natural spaces. It is not just a trail, it is a legacy, and a gift that continues to grow.
